001 - Bibi Khanym

12 + 8 Pt rosette pattern from the Bibi Khanym Mosque in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
Original watercolour on 300 g/m². 42 x 56 cm

Process portfolio

This 12 plus 8 Pt rosette pattern has ‘tapered Timerid’ proportions typical of late 14th, early 15th century patterns found in Emir Timur’s Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Another version of it can be seen in the Shah-i Zinda complex. There is a ‘chunkiness’ about ‘tapered Timurid’ proportions that distinguishes them from 12 8 Pt stars with “Classic” and “Double-parallel” proportions. My layout follows Rajen Astho (2016). The palette is a blend of ruby reds, manganese blues and iridescent pearl.
