002 - Oculus

6 Pt pattern on an oculus at the palace of Khirbet el Mafjar, Jericho.
Original watercolour on 300 g/m². 36 x 48 cm

Process portfolio

This piece is a tessellated interpretation of an oculus (a circular opening in the centre of a dome or a wall) ruin near the 8th century Umayyad palace of Caliph Hishām ibn ʿAbd al-Malik, the tenth caliph, who died in 743 AD. His winter palace was destroyed by an earthquake only four years later in 747 AD. The palette (two pairs of contrasting bands) accentuates the sixfold symmetry of the pattern, which follows Alan Adams’ analysis and layout.
