What inspires an indigo, manganese blue, silver and polka dot palette? Is it that fun indigo experiment a couple of weeks back, or the tones of sea and sky on that walk by the seashore, or those favourite jeans, or the inner workings of soul as it traverses moon and stars on a crystal clear night flecked with snowflakes? Always a joy and a mystery!
This piece is one of two artworks based on a 15th century Mamluk tile panel with stars, regular pentagons and interlaced kites from the Al Azhar mosque in Old Cairo. This version centres around the 12 Pt star (see also artwork 010). Pattern analysis and tile layout follows Alan Adams.
