010 - Al Azhar Gold

8 + 12 Pt Mamluk tile panel from the façade of the Al Azhar mosque in Old Cairo.
Original watercolour on 300 g/m². 36 x 48 cm

Process portfolio

Based on a 15th century Mamluk tile panel with a 12 Pt star, regular pentagons and interlaced kites from the façade of the Al Azhar mosque in Old Cairo, this piece places the 8 Pt interlaced ‘kite’ star at the centre of the tile (see also artwork 009). The geometry follows Alan Adams’ series on the ‘Construction of the Twelve Point Islamic Star’ (Part VII). For the palette I chose a blend of sepia, raw and burnt umber, soft blues and golds.
