The imaginal palette process is always a venture into the unknown, while the actual palette unfolds from an ongoing dialogue between the colours amongst themselves and the artist. Painting at times flows easily and at times it is more like conducting an unruly orchestra. This is the ‘ethnic’ version of a ten-fold rosette pattern from the 14th century Bou Inania Madrasa in Fes. The palette of emeralds, golds, black and vivid quinacridone reds (scarlet, magenta and ruby) is inspired by the vibrant colours of the city of Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains, some broken zellij pottery from Fes and an autumnal walk in Dulwich park.
