Frithjof Schuon wrote: ‘We are always at the centre of the world when we address the Eternal’. This tessellated five and ten-fold star pattern from the Nasir-ol-Molk Mosque in Shiraz seems to impart a sense of the eternal. The analysis and layout follows Paul Marchant. While pondering on the multitude of delicious palette possibilities for these little tenfold rosettes, some intriguing diagonal pathways of fours, fives and eights suggested themselves. I could paint this piece a thousand different ways and still not exhaust the pattern's potential. The palette blends different shades of blue and turquoise with pale gold and iridescent pearl.
