My first attempts at constructing this stunning ten-fold Persian tympanum pattern from the Jameh Mosque in Yazd ended in frustration and a sad pile of catawampus drawings! Some months later, following Alan Adams’ analysis and layout, I worked out the basic tile pattern, tessellated it, interlaced all the bands and designed motifs and centres for the rosettes. The palette of cobalt, helio and teal turquoise, dark blue indigo, titan buff, iridescent gold and pearl is essentially Persian and typical of many Yazd patterns. This piece reminds me what is possible with love, determination, patience, dedication - and the drawings of a master draughtsman!
