029 - Rhapsody

10 Pt Mamluk pattern from Sultan Baybars al-Jashnagir’s Quran in Cairo
Original watercolour on 300 g/m². 42 x 56 cm

Process portfolio

The 5-fold symmetry of this tessellated and interlaced 10-fold rosette pattern follows Richard Henry’s analysis of a pattern on the page of a Quran made by the master illuminator, Abu Bakr, for the Sultan of Cairo, Baybars al-Jashnagir around 1306/705. My palette is a contemporary 'rhapsody on a theme’ inspired by the pattern itself and a light-hearted ‘still life’ composition with gems, candles and shawls.
