The Ottoman imperial architect Mimar Sinan completed this mosque for Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmet Pasha in 1572 CE. The geometry of the square repeat tile pattern follows Richard Henry (Istanbul study trip, 2015). The original rosette frames on a painted ceiling are filled with intricate arabesques, not with simple motifs like mine. There is something quite mysteriously wonderful about applying colour to geometry. Working late in my studio one evening, my painting transformed itself into a three-dimensional Ottoman tapestry!
