032 - Transformation

12 + 8 + 6 Pt mosaic pattern from the portal of the Jāmeh Mosque in Yazd.
Original watercolour on 300 g/m². 42 x 56 cm

Process portfolio

This is one of two ‘Persian’ pieces inspired by a C14 Muzaffarid mosaic tile seen on the portal of the (Friday) Jāmeh Mosque in Yazd (see also Artwork 033). Credit to Paul Marchant for the analysis and layout (2015). This version has interlaced ribbons, and the geometric motifs in the 12 and 8 Pt stars, as well as the motifs in the pentagons and ‘butterfly’ shapes, differ slightly from the original in situ pattern. The palette for this piece was inspired by the vibrant greens and reds of an ancient Anatolian ‘Saph’ prayer rug seen in the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum in Istanbul.
