The dome of Sultan Qaytbay’s mausoleum in Cairo (completed 1472-74) is decorated with amazing 6 and 9-fold symmetry stars and floral arabesques. My geometry layout follows Tony Lee’s analysis.

Colour is an interesting concept when, like me, you live in the North. Daylight painting hours grow shorter from September onwards and by December, palettes created in the late afternoon look completely different the next morning. My palette of pinks, purples and blues was inspired by a flaming sunset, cushion covers brought back from a trip to Istanbul, and amethyst and sapphire gemstones. A rather unorthodox combination, perhaps, for the onion dome of a Mamluk mausoleum!
