Palette Trials
As a watercolourist, exploring colour combinations and creating vibrant, luminous palettes is part of the process of crafting an essence-rich artwork. The spirit of playfulness is paramount. Most of my palettes are inspired by the world around me, the wondrous variety of colours found in nature, the art and architecture seen during my travels to Islamic lands, but also beautiful objects seen in museums and exhibitions, films and paintings. Colours have personalities that adapt to their surroundings, so colour choices must remain fluid until the final brushstroke. In moments of heightened awareness, palettes arise spontaneously. Experimenting beforehand with different tones, hues and techniques on a small part of the pattern is a fun way to try out new ideas that may or may not inform final palette choices.
